Maintaining a Healthy Lifestyle
Living a healthy college lifestyle is a challenge. Between friends, parties, and that liberal arts education, finding time to think about healthy choices can seem nearly impossible. The key is to start early. Develop habits at the beginning of the year that will carry through the rest of your time at Furman and hopefully into your post-grad life.
Fantasy Football Sleepers
The 2013-14 NFL season is less than a month away, and fantasy football has already begun. The draft is crucial for starting the season on the right foot, so I want to share some of my sleeper picks. For each player, I’ve included an insight on the upcoming season. In no particular order, here are my top ten sleepers for the upcoming season.
Restaurant Review: Jamaica Mi Irie Provides Caribbean Twist
It doesn’t look like much from the street front, but Jamaica Mi Irie has huge personality. The restaurant is downtown on South Main Street, right beside Takosushi. The small restaurant, which opened last October, radiates a Caribbean vibe.
Relaxation and Exercise: The Key to Surviving Finals
Getting active when you barely have time to breathe is hard. Between classes, clubs, studying, and the occasional spurt of this rare things we call “fun,” doing something physical seems more like a chore. However your days play out here at Furman, it’s never easy to take the time to be physically active. Truth is it doesn’t take that much movement to make you feel better.
Student Profile: FUSAB President Anne Murtha
What do Ed Sheeran, Kenan Thompson, Jesse Tyler Ferguson and the Biltmore all have in common? They are all events brought to Furman University’s campus through the Furman University Student Activity Board, or FUSAB.
The Tortoise and the Hare
It’s crunch time, guys. This is the part of the year where the campus divides itself into two distinct factions: the Tortoises and the Hares.
Season’s Eatings
You may not think this would change your eating habits much, but trust me, go and look at the sources of food at the grocery store. Bananas from Florida and berries from Chile line the produce section. If you were to eat seasonally, even for a month, your choices would be extremely limited. And maybe that’s a good thing.
SOFI: Society of Free Enquiry
Furman University’s Society for Free Inquiry, or “SOFI”, is “an organization of nontheist students and students who are skeptical or uncertain of traditional religious denominations. It offers support for students who consider themselves atheist, agnostic, skeptic, humanist, etc.
Farewell From Caroline Davis
Change is like a boner. It’s hard and sometimes it comes at inconvenient times, but it’s necessary for life to go on. And usually you feel better after it than you did before it.
Healthy Food Choices: DH Tour
There are times in college when you just need a good burger and warm cookies. I’m talking Cookout and Dining Hall to the max. But there are also times, actually 90% of the time, when your body needs good, clean fuel. My goal is to give you ways to make healthy eating just a little easier and that occasional splurge just a little more occasional.
Critical/Hate: Thinking About Pop Culture in the Summer Months
School is coming to a close, and with it the summer movie storm is going to start. So many explosions, so many bikinis. Countless villains are going to flow off the screen and into our eyes. It happens every summer, and the bigger the box office opening, the more times we are more likely to go see it.
Let’s Change Poinsett!
As the kind warmth of spring takes the place of greedy winter, many Furman students are taking part in the Poinsett Project. The glorious project was an initiative taken last year in an attempt to paint a mural on a Poinsett Highway building, and oversaw the successful construction (and afterwards deconstruction for removal) of a Habitat for Humanity house frame.
Springtime for Furman
Spring has finally sprung here at Furman… until the weather report tells us it’s going to be in the 40’s again at least. But for now, the pastel colored shorts and flip flops have come out of storage. Dress code is not the only thing that has changed at Furman this season. The tulips have been planted and have finally bloomed, baseball season is underway, and Furman students have left the confines of their dorms and apartments to enjoy this blissful weather.
McAlister Quirks
Most visitors to McAlister Auditorium get to see the building’s Georgian brick exterior, its stately chandelier-lit vestibule watched over by busts of Furman presidents past, and the auditorium itself, with its neat rows of white-backed, green-cushioned chairs facing the elegant undulating curtain of the stage.
Psychic Readings
For $25, you can know everything you’ve ever wanted to know about your future. Lola King, the psychic, lives in a cozy house just a few miles away from Furman University down on Poinsett Highway with her husband. Earlier this week, I had the pleasure and opportunity of meeting with King who gave me a detailed report about my past, present and future.
Farewell from Jeff Levene
I am horrified at the thought of having to leave Furman in two weeks. Plagued with senioritis and a solid disdain against the outside world, everything I do seems an act of rebellion towards my eminent departure from North Village. But that hasn’t kept me from indulging in a collection of undeserved self-reward.
Furman Professor Opens Boutique
A new boutique has arrived in town. Traveling Chic Boutique has joined the gallery of small boutiques, art studios and specialty restaurants that line Main Street. Advertising affordable brand names and promoting support of local charities, the budding franchise is hoping to make its mark on downtown Greenville and the greater Greenville community.
A Tale of Horror, Glitter, and Minivans
You’re driving back onto campus after a quick trip to Walmart, and that’s when you see them. The cones. They’re everywhere. Far too many of the little orange things to be necessary. And as if the massive amounts of cones aren’t overkill enough, there are at least five guys in yellow, reflective vests making extra sure that you don’t run over the unsuspecting pedestrians. Sorry sir, I forgot this wasn’t Grand Theft Auto. Thank you for reminding me that these aren’t AI’s in a video game for me to drag along under the axles of my car at 120 mph.
Take a Spring Break
Jeff Levene recommends places to go and things to see during Furman’s Spring break.
Dance Spectacular
Furman Dance Company’s annual Dance Spectacular is a show the caters to everyone’s interest. Everything from ballet, jazz, contemporary, and even clogging will be in the show.
G’Vegas Baby: The Weekend in Greenville
Spending the weekend in Greenville? Here are some tips.
The 85th Academy Awards
It’s Oscars season and the nominations are out. A few of our writers weigh in on their picks for several of the categories up for grabs.
Dual Professor Profile: The Turners
Dr. Helen Lee Turner and her younger brother Dr. David Turner have worked at Furman together for many years. They even pursued their undergraduate degrees together at Wake Forest.
Back to the Land of Fancy Furman
John Denver once sang the wise words, “country roads take me home to the place I belong…” 3300 Poinsett Hwy. It has been a whirlwind of a year living overseas for the two of us. After numerous scones and pounds of pasta it was time to return to the wonders of the DH.
F FLU All the Time
As the son of a cardiologist, one might assume that all my health fears would revolve around overzealous amounts of bacon, drive through windows, and having Paula Dean as a personal chef.
