Furman announced on Tuesday that, thanks to donations from golf alumni, the men’s golf team will be able to continue operations, reversing the Board of Trustees’ decision to cancel the program for budgetary reasons.
The university will also be setting up a scholarship endowment fund with alumni donations.
Furman golf alumni and professional golfer Brad Faxon said alumni worked closely with school officials to find a solution that worked best for everyone.
“We are all proud alums of the Furman golf program, and none of us wanted to see it discontinued,” he said. “So we talked with university officials, and discussed what we could do to bring the program back.”
It remains to be seen how these groups will work together to implement a plan that will keep golf at Furman as a permanent fixture. The press release did not indicate whether the team has been able to retain their incoming recruits since announcing the cancellation of the program a couple weeks ago.
