Furman (0-2) failed to finish a late rally against Coastal Carolina (2-0), falling to their Southern Conference foe 35-28. A couple of early Paladin turnovers helped Coastal jump to a 14-0 lead in the first quarter after scoring on two of their first three possessions. Furman failed to capitalize on early opportunities, missing two field goals, including one to end the first half.
The second half was a different story as the Paladins, led by running back Hank McCloud and quarterback Reese Hannon, mustered together three straight touchdown drives. McCloud had a career high 133 rushing yards on 21 carriers, while Hannon threw two fourth quarter touchdown passes to bring the Paladins within striking distance. However, Coastal had two scoring drives in the second half as well and never had less than a seven point lead after the first quarter. Furman will face Presbyterian next week in the first home game of the season.
