Pirates End 20 Year Playoff Drought, and Aim for More
Perhaps the best story in baseball this year has been that of the Pirates. After 20 straight years of wallowing in the bottom of the NL Central standings, never once managing so much as a winning record, let alone a playoff appearance, they have managed to field a winning team once more. They finished the regular season with a 94-68 record and beat the Reds in a wild card playoff to make the NLDS, where at the time of this writing they hold a 2-1 lead, just one win away from moving on to the NLCS.

Album Review: Lorde’s debut Pure Heroine
Lorde’s debut album Pure Heroine was released as a follow up to her EP, The Love Club. Though groomed by the largest American music label, Universal Music Group (UMG), the same label as record company creations like Justin Bieber and Nicky Minaj, this sixteen-year-old Australian sensation helped write the lyrics to songs that challenge the status quo of popular music. The authenticity of the music shines through, despite the record label’s influence.

Government that Works
Democracy is violent almost by definition. As outlined by James Madison in the tenth essay of the Federalist Papers, one of the greatest threats in any government by the people is that different groups will move so strongly in different directions that it will tear a democratic society apart. In arguing for the adoption of the United States Constitution in 1787, Madison describes the problem with the current partisanship in Washington, crystallized in the ongoing government shutdown that shows no signs of ending.
