This alumnae profile is on Lillian Brock Flemming ’71, ’75 (M), ’14 (H). Flemming was one of the first three African-American women to attend Furman. She received a Master’s in Mathematics Education at Furman in 1975 and an honorary Doctor of Humanities from Furman in 2014.After graduating, Flemming worked as a math teacher at Southside High School for 23 years. Flemming was elected as the first African-American woman to serve on Greenville City Council in 1981. In this interview, Flemming discusses her experiences at Furman, her teaching philosophy, and her journey in Greenville City Council.
