Instead of worrying about the usual exams, papers, and lack of sleep, the junior class’s biggest concern this week was entering Furman’s housing lottery in hopes of ensuring a spot in the North Village apartments for the upcoming semester.

Every year, the Heller Service Corps tries to find ways to remind Furman students of the importance and benefit of reaching out during the holidays. This year, the Heller Holiday Giving Trees, which are set up in various places around campus, allow students to choose specific items that they can give to one of 53 organizations that request gifts.

Designed by three Furman students, Dicho, which is short for dichotomy, is an iPhone app created as a way to get feedback from a specific group or the general public by posing questions with two answers.

The rules apply to everyone, but the new student organization policies implemented this year have had their greatest effect on Greek organizations. The reason? Alcohol’s involved.

Due to budget concerns, Furman will not even be hiring someone to replace Shaner, which has forced the philosophy department to make adjustments to keep business running as usual, shuffling professors and eliminating three classes that Shaner taught.

A tragedy hit the Furman community this summer when recent graduate Eric Weigel passed away in a kayaking accident on Wednesday, June 5.
