Furman kicked off its start to the 2022-23 basketball season with “Hoops Knight,” an event that introduced each member of both the Men’s and Women’s D1 basketball teams. The event allowed students to participate in a game of “knockout” against players on both teams, and gave four students the opportunity to win $10,000 each. The four students, who were selected by raffle ticket, were randomly picked to participate in either a bowling, half-court shot, 3-pointer, or a skills set challenge for a chance at the prize money. Nobody actually ended up winning $10K, but there were a few close attempts, and the student body had a blast cheering on the four selected students.
The College Insider Mid-Major Poll recently ranked Furman Men’s Basketball #6 last week. With such high expectations for this year’s basketball season, it was exciting to put names to the jersey numbers as well as welcome the incoming freshmen on both teams. The assistant directors and coaches also were present, and the head coach of Furman’s men’s basketball team, Bob Richey, was given an opportunity to address the crowd. Richey talked about the importance of Furman students and fans showing up in-person to home games as the average points advantage for home games was roughly 8.3 points last year. He encouraged students and fans alike to do their best to support their women and men’s basketball teams at both away and home games, citing that the fans are the first thing the teams both hear and see when they enter the court.
Overall, the 2022-23 basketball season is shaping up to be an exciting one, especially when considering both teams have never been stronger, and the rankings have never been more optimistic. Roll Dins!
