The Furman Men’s Basketball Team played the Wofford Terriers at Jerry Richardson Indoor Stadium on Saturday, January 22. The Paladins shot the lights out, leaving the court with a score of 75-50 and having dealt Wofford their first home basketball defeat against Furman since 2011. Both teams entered with similar records, with Wofford holding 12-7 and Furman 13-7.
The game got off to a slow start, but then steadily began to ramp up into the middle of the first half. After the opening points scored by Alex Hunter, Furman maintained its lead the entire time, only once coming into serious danger of being overtaken around the seven-minute mark. Towards the end of the half, Furman finally began to widen the gap, ending with a score of 37-27.
Moving into the second half, Furman quickly began to dominate the court, sinking three-point shot after three-point shot. While the Terriers resisted fiercely throughout, the disheartening effect of Furman’s apparent inability to miss their shots seemed to have begun to wear on them. While both sides defense was admirable, Wofford’s offence wasn’t capable of keeping pace with Furman’s shooters. In the end, Wofford scored a total of 23 points in the second half compared to Furman’s 38.
Furman starter Jalen Slawson led the Paladins in points scored, putting up 18 points (5 rebounds, 1 assist), followed closely by Mike Bothwell, who put up 15 points (5 rebounds, 2 assists). Furman ended the night with a remarkable three-point percentage of 48.65. This long hoped for defeat of Wofford on their home turf has left Furman firmly ranked second in the SoCon, with a conference record of 6-2 trailing behind Chattanooga’s 6-1.
