Basketball Stays Strong as Season End Approaches

With the end of the season coming up fast, the men’s basketball team will push to remain at the top of the Southern Conference standings. Currently, the Paladins are tied for first with ETSU. Furman won the first match-up against ETSU 65-56. The teams will play again in Johnson City on Feb. 19.

Currently, the team is on a five-game winning streak and is 20-5 overall on the season. The most recent home game against Mercer was a memorable one for senior Jordan Lyons. Lyons became the all-time record holder for three-point baskets, with 274 in his career. Lyons had 13 points in the game.

This past weekend, Furman played Western Carolina for the second time in less than a month. Last time, the Paladins defeated the Catamounts, 83-79, so Furman looked to sweep Western Carolina in the second match-up of the season. The first half of the game was close ending with Furman leading by two, 39-37. Furman went on in the second half to win, 82-73.

Lyons broke yet another Furman all-time record in the game against Western Carolina. He is now the all-time leader with 91 career victories as a Paladin.

Two of five losses on the season have been in the Southern Conference. Both of the opponents,  UNC Greensboro and Wofford, are still on the schedule for the Paladins. These games will be important as both of these teams are right behind Furman in the standings. UNCG and Wofford will also play each other again this season.

With six games left in the season, the Paladins are on the road during the week to play against Samford in Birmingham, Ala. Then, the team is back home on Feb. 15 to play Chattanooga.

An important upcoming game is the Wofford match-up for the finale of the Weekend at the Well games. This will be the third and final game that the Paladins play in Downtown Greenville at Bon Secours Wellness Arena. The first Weekend at the Well game resulted in a win against Winthrop, and the second game was a loss against UNC Greensboro. This final Well game against Spartanburg rival Wofford is bound to bring the Greenville community together.
