After a slow start, the
season has begun to look
up for the Furman women’s
volleyball team. The team went
on a four-game win-streak and
has won five of their past seven
games, including a dominant
victory over East Tennessee
State, who has a record of 18-4
and 9-1 in SoCon play.
Despite the slow start, many Furman players have stood out throughout the season and played a large role in the team’s win-streak. Redshirt-junior middle blocker Courtney Hoffman had a career-high 19 kills in the team’s win against Chattanooga and regularly puts up high numbers in the kills statistics. Freshman libero Andrea Aceveda has made a huge impact in the back row, including a career- high 29 digs in a 2-3 loss to Western Carolina and 28 digs in the team’s 3-1 win against UNC Greensboro.
A tough 0-3 loss to Western Carolina on Oct. 26 ended the Paladins’ winning streak at four. Despite losses in all three sets, the Paladins never stopped fighting and came within at least six points of winning in all three sets against Western Carolina. Aceveda had a match-high 19 digs while redshirt-sophomore setter Katie Murphy had 35 assists in the game.
In order to get back in
the win column, the team
must rely on the combination
of strong offense and steady
defense that worked so well
during their win-streak. The
team looks to bounce back
into the win column when they
play The Citadel on Nov. 1 in
Charleston before traveling to
Spartanburg to play Wofford
the next day.
