Furman Football Loses to The Citadel on Rainy Homecoming Weekend

As rain fell and the temperature continued to drop, the Furman men’s football team faced another Homecoming Weekend defeat with a 27-10 loss to the Citadel on Saturday.

The Paladins opened the scoring around three minutes into the first quarter with a 48-yard field goal from junior Grayson Atkins, extending his Furman record to seventeen consecutive-made field goals. The Citadel bounced back a few minutes later with a touchdown and extra point, taking a 7-3 lead that lasted through halftime.

The Paladins recovered multiple Citadel fumbles and intercepted a Citadel pass, but the Citadel was able to do the same to the Paladins throughout the game. The Citadel pulled ahead even more with two touchdowns, making the score 21-3 in the third quarter.

The Paladins pushed back in the fourth quarter with a 4-yard touchdown run from Devin Wynn and an extra point from Atkins to bring the score to 21-10, but the Citadel countered back with a field goal to make the score 24-10 before tacking on another field goal later in the fourth quarter to bring the final score to 27-10.

The Paladins look to bounce back when the team travels to North Carolina next Saturday, Oct. 26 to battle Western Carolina before going to Tennessee to play Chattanooga the weekend after on Saturday, Nov. 2.
