The morning of Jan. 7, 1988, Furman students woke up to approximately three inches of snow, as expected, to cancelled classes. Over the course of that day, the snow continued to fall, and by the end of the day the Greenville-Spartanburg Airport measured the snowfall at 12 inches.
While the snowfall between Thurs. Jan 21 and Fri. Jan. 22 was nowhere near 12 inches, Furman students still rejoiced at the announcement that classes would be cancelled Jan. 22. Senior Alicia Nichols knew that this could be her last snow day at Furman so she was sure to take advantage of it.
“Two of my roommates and I went outside and played in snow. We actually went out and went sledding over by the bell tower, then we took pictures until our fingers froze,” Nichols explained.
“We tried to start a snowball fight, but it kind of got shut down pretty quickly,” Nichols’ roommate Stephanie Neighbors added. “There wasn’t really enough snow for a snowball fight. But we came back inside, watched Disney movies and made hot chocolate. So all in all, it was a good day.”
As evidenced by a quick scroll through social media or by the physical crisscrossing in the snow around campus, Nichols and Neighbors were not alone in their snow day adventures.
