One of the great thingsabout living at Furman is being able to take advantage of the nightlife in Downtown Greenville. A ten to fifteen minute drive takes you right to Main Street where you can find a surprisingly diverse number of options for grabbing dinner or a few drinks. The bar scene boasts a decent selection for those students aged 21 and up. Among Furman students, Tassie’s and Corner Pocket seem to be the most popular places to go. Unfortunately, Corner Pocket is shutting down for remodeling and a change in management Oct. 1. It is not confirmed when the bar will be reopening, but current staff estimate that it could not be until around February.
Due to Corner Pocket closing, Furman students are sure to be on the lookout for a new go-to bar. There are several great places to try, if you are wondering where you should go out this weekend. Some of these bars are a little better suited for grabbing a drink and dinner during happy hour, and others are better for a late-night club atmosphere.
One great bar is Sip, where there is a great rooftop lounge area and a wine tasting room. You can choose two, four-or six-ounce tastings from a selection of over forty wines as you enjoy the view of Main Street. Another place to check out is 21 East where they have great food, several draft brews on tap, and specialty cocktails. They are always switching up their menu, so you will never be bored of having the same drinks every “thirsty” Thursday.
Rey’s is another great option for college students because they have awesome deals and a more laid-back vibe and city-feel. They have Taco Tuesdays where you can get $2 tacos and coronas starting around 6:00 p.m. Some Thursday nights Rey’s has $5 burgers and $10 all-you-can-eat wings.
Carolina Ale House is a little less laid back and has more of a sports bar feel. It is a great venue if you just want to grab a beer and watch a game, but otherwise is usually crowded, and does not have very good drink deals on anything other than beer.
On the other side of DT Greenville, past Falls Park on South Main, there are a few more great options for a late-night club scene. On the Roxx is a great place to go later in the day. Their drink specials are standard, and they have special Bing shots that are worth a try. Right down the street is Ford’s, an oyster bar by day, and a great club-style bar at night. The crowd at Ford’s is a little younger which can be difficult to find in some of the DT Greenville’s other bars.
Overall, paying a visit to any of these places on a night out in Downtown Greenville is sure to be a good time. When it comes down to it, if you are looking for a more club-like scene with music and dancing, hit up Rey’s, On the Roxx, and Ford’s which are all open until 2:00 a.m. and always have a DJ and pleasant crowds. If you just want to grab a quick drink after a long week of class, I would definitely check out Sip or Carolina Ale House. You can even go out and find another bar on your own; there are a ton of places to try out! Have a fun time, and as always, drink responsibly and have a designated driver.
